Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix

REVIEW
: SuperStreet Fighter 2: Turbo HD Remix is the first ever 'remake'of a classic Street Fighter game and one of the most ambitious fightinggame projects to date. What more deserving title of such a remake than the classic, long-time fan favorite,Super Street Fighter2 Turbo, the last installment from the immortal SF2 series (which gotits start in 1991). Every background, charactersprite and frame of animation has been resized to a larger scale and was completely redrawn by the team of talented artists over at UDONComics.
As someone who grew up religiously playing EVERY incarnation of StreetFighter 2 in the arcades (and on SNES at home), I have nearly every frame of animationin SF2 embeddedinto my brain. Like many other die-hards out there, I can fully appreciatewhat UDON has done with this timeless classic. Redrawing and re-coloring everysingle frame of animation must have been an immeasurably frustrating andchallenging process, along with much 'trial & error'experimentation. That said, let me be the first to congratulate UDON foractually pulling this off. The final product is a beautiful sight for any oldschool Street Fighter fan... and it was well worth the effort guys.

Super Turbo never looked so crispy... and don't forget spinning knuckle goes through fireballs!

The all new character sprites and backgrounds really stand out, even thoughthey're based on 'ancient' pixel-based artwork and animations. Even bytoday'sstandards of 2D fighting games, HD Remix's 2D character sprites are definitelybigger than most, and fill the screen like no others everhave. The iconic characters themselves have enough presence and charisma to fill thescreen under normal circumstances, but these beefy &colorful new sprites simply light upthe room! The new and improved renditions of the classic locations andbackgrounds are also excellent and breathe new life into the game.
HD Remix
really does look like a completely new title, complete with fabulous redrawn selection screen artwork. The brand new character endings drawn by UDON are also a much appreciated addition.Thein-game character sprites match all of this new artwork nicely, and each frameof animation is pretty much its own unique artwork. Overall, I'm pleased with nearly every characterin the game as far as looks go. They really nailed the faces and updated facialexpressions. The art style also somewhat resembles the way legendary Capcomartist 'Edayan' draws them (who in my opinion is oneof the best Capcom artists of all time, famous for his amazing work on RivalSchools & SSF2T Revival).
Due to the nature of redrawing such significantly smaller pixel-based sprites, the new sprite animations in HD Remix do have a dated look and can sometimes appear'jittery' or 'choppy'. The backgrounds, while looking awesomelysharp, also still contain characters that poorly animate (2 frames ftw)! It's a forgivable flaw, given the nature of this project. It was obviously arequirement to keepthe 'frame count' for each move the same as in the original, so thatthe gameplay remains unchanged. On that front, UDON definitely succeeded.

Capcom kept gameplay mechanics perfectly intact from the original arcade versionof Super Turbo, but also included a new 'HD Mode' featuring new gameplay tweaks, character balancing, extra moves, more combo possibilities. HD Mode alsofeatures some brand new character colors, which is always cool to see. Speakingof colors, all of the iconic character colors from the likes of ChampionshipEdition, Turbo, and Super are all remastered in HD Remix.(Old school fans remember how big of a deal it was to have new alternatecolors for your characters back in the early 90's). If you were ever afan of the Street Fighter 2 series, there's no reason not to loveplaying this visually superior version of one of the biggest arcadehits of all time. Don't forget that this is the series that sparked the competitivefighting game community and brought fighting games and arcades in the early 90's to a new level.
Speaking ofarcades, where ever did they go? ...I'll always miss the smell of token machinesand old arcade cabinets. How times havechanged. Seems like the best arcade you can go to these days is in yourown home with online mode. HD Remix's online mode isn't perfect and I had sometrouble finding matches and staying connected at first. OnceI did connect with a few friends, the game ran smoothly for the most part. There'salso a Network Smoothing option which also helps out when any lag pops up.Overall, it seems like you can play the same type of intense game online asyou can offline. Unfortunately, online options are bare bones in HD Remix, but the essentials are there.
As far as gameplay goes, you know this game is OLD school. As much as I love playing HD Remix withmy old school buddies, honestly, I'd still rather pop in a game from theStreet Fighter III or Street Fighter Alpha1, 2 or 3. Beingable to parry a fireball when your life is down to nothing (so you don't dieof chip damage), or use a wider variety of super moves to mix things up arefighting game novelties that I dearly miss when playing SSF2T. Even assomeone who grew up in the arcades playing Street Fighter 1 and 2,I still prefer newer, more advanced gameplay systemsthese days. Besides, sometimes my thumbs don't feel like working so hardanymore..... After playing an old game like Super Turbo for an extendedperiod of time, you're reminded how much work these old games used to be:Shoryuken,Hurricane Kick, Low Jab, Low Jab, Shoryuken, Shoryuken, Hadoken, Shoryuken,Hadoken, Fake Hadoken, Jump in, Low Jab, Shoryuken...Carpal Tunnel, andI lost... Dammit, and 2 more rounds to go.

The big guys are freakin' HUGE in HD Remix!

Options... HD Remix has em! Firstly, there are a nice variety of arcadestyle Dip Switch settings, which allow you to tweak some interestingdetails about specific character moves and abilities. You also have the optionto set the stage music back to the original arcade themes, or keep the default'remixed' themes (most of which sound extraordinary)! And, as funny as it sounds, you can even switch out the character sprites back to the original pixels! The old style sprites have a filtered and'blurred' lookto them, and although they look rather out of place in front of the HDbackgrounds, they come out looking fairly decent for old-ass pixels.

Final Words:

It's been a long time coming, but HD Remix is a 'gift from the heart' to veteran Street Fighter fans and was well worth the wait. It's beautiful to see allof the original World Warriors brought back to life in a new art direction, andin full HD. The coloring is particularly well done and the attention todetail on the character sprites will not soon be forgotten. A lot of the 'roughedges' of the old sprites were expertly smoothed out and given a fresh cel-shadedstyle re-coloring.

Thevisual overhaul of HD Remix didn't translate without imperfections. The factthat these huge character sprites keep the same amount of frames of animation asthe originals (which are 17 years old), oftentimes makes them appear awkwardlyjittery. After being spoiled with the amazing fluidity of the Street Fighter III series and the cool 'anime-esk' look of StreetFighter Alpha characters, the classic characters of HD Remix do have some obviousflaws. For one, everyone still turns into M. Bisonwhen they're on fire (or turns into Zangief if they're T. Hawk)... I was hoping they'd fix that.
I'm sure everyone willdraw different opinions on the way the characters look with the new graphics... and if youwant my two cents, Cammy went a little overboard on the eye makeup and FeiLong's noggin is a bit large. Nitpicking aside, I realize 'perfection' in a project like this is damn nearimpossible. For what UDON had to work with, they really camethrough for the fans. In any case, HD Remix is one of the most impressive remakesof any classic 2D game I've ever played. It's pretty much a must-own for anyfighting game fan with a PS3 or 360.~TFGWebmaster

There's no doubt about it — this is the best version of Street Fighter II that fighting game fans are ever going to get. Everything from the graphics to the tweaks in each character's moveset makes Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix feel like a completely new fighter rather than an updated version of previous SFII titles. Capcom's efforts really stand out in this remake, and after all these years, it's worth both the wait and the price.

A physical duplicate of the amusement was later discharged as a component of Capcom Digital Collection. That SF game is obviously Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. As its title suggests, the HD Remix version is a remaster/remake of that classic fighting game. Thankfully, though, PC gamers can. Every version of Street Fighter II always had a few things that threatened to unbalance the gameplay, or simply made certain fighters into cheap powerhouses. With each new update to the series — Champion, Turbo, and Super — Capcom got one step closer to perfecting the series' fighting engine once and for all. With Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, everything feels like it has finally fallen into place. While there's still a few balance issues that need to be hammered out (a few characters have been over-buffed yet again), HD Remix serves up plenty of awesome action that should please any gamer with a fighting pulse. Oh, and the game looks downright gorgeous.

More than anything, HD Remix absolutely shines in the graphics department. The level of polish on the hand-drawn stages and characters is breathtaking, and there's plenty of fine detail in every nook and cranny of the game for eagle-eyed fans to swoon over. Sure, it's one thing to redraw Chun Li and gussy up her respective stage, but doing it while retaining that classic feel from 15 years ago is something else altogether. Of course, there's subtle hints of 3-D elements in the special effects of moves like the Hadouken and Sonic Boom, which only makes pulling off a 10-hit combo super move that much sweeter. Count yourself lucky if you have access to an HD television — but even if you don't, HD Remix still looks fantastic in standard definition.

A lot of changes have been made to the combat, and it's obvious in each fighter's moveset. Some techniques have been toned down (or up), others have been given new animations and timing, and there are a handful of brand-new moves to learn that can really change up your matches. For series vets, the rebalancing of the characters can feel more than a little awkward. Personally, I think that a few characters have been given a little too much power, especially in the area of strong-hit combos (I'm looking at you, Fei Long and Blanka). Still, it's refreshing to know that although you no longer have the ability to judge the range of your attacks down to the nth pixel, careful practice will let both veterans and newcomers be able to fight on even footing. It doesn't matter if you're playing with a controller or a joystick — the timing required to dodge fireballs, counter throws, and trade hits with your opponent is much more forgiving than before, and with some hardcore practice, you'll be fighting with the best in mere days.

Thankfully, there are plenty of other things to add to HD Remix's ridiculous amount of replay value and fan service. Old school fighters can get back to basics with an un-rebalanced Classic mode, the training mode and hitbox display options will be immensely helpful to fighters with rusty skills, and extensive online rankings coupled with the new World Tournament mode will have gamers constantly striving to reach the top of the mountain. I can't think of a better way to spend your online dollars — Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is the best version of SFII yet, if not the best Street Fighter game in 15 years.
